The expensive mistake I made with Andrew Miller was treating him like a ninth-inning trophy. I kept him unused through the hard part of close games, then brought him in for one routine out. That is a rough way to waste a card that can erase a dangerous pocket of a lineup. Before spending a chunk of MLB 26 stubs on bullpen names, decide which innings actually keep beating you.
Andrew Miller is best when the game gets awkward
Miller is not the arm I reach for just because the inning number says "late." I use him when a lefty slugger is due, when runners are on, or when the other player has started sitting fastball. His release and slider shape create uncomfortable takes, especially against hitters expecting a normal overhand look. That matters more than a flashy overall rating in Ranked games.
The slider is still the reason to carry him, but throwing it every other pitch is how opponents settle in. Start with a firm fastball near the hands, then show the slider below the zone. Once they start chasing, you can steal a strike with the same slider on the edge instead of trying to force another whiff.
1. Bring Miller in before the opponent reaches their best left-handed bats.
2. Use fastballs early, then move the slider after two strikes.
3. Do not let one successful slider decide your whole sequence.
Where he fits in a real bullpen build
I prefer Miller as a fireman or eighth-inning setup arm, not a locked closer. A hard-throwing right-hander after him gives the opponent a much different timing problem. Pairing him with a sinkerball reliever also helps when you need a double play instead of a strikeout. The goal is not to collect famous names; it is to cover different game states without burning your best arm too early.
Against left-handed hitters, Miller can work both sides of the plate. Back-foot sliders are useful, but they become predictable fast. For right-handed hitters, I have better results going fastball inside, slider away, then changing eye level rather than endlessly fishing below the zone. Good players will take the obvious chase pitch all night.
Common Miller mistakes in online play
The biggest error is assuming handedness alone wins the matchup. Some players crush lefties and have no issue reading sliders. Watch their first at-bat: do they chase low pitches, pull inside heat, or take until two strikes? That information is more useful than forcing Miller into every lefty-versus-lefty situation.
Another resource issue is paying heavily for a bullpen upgrade while your rotation still cannot survive five innings. Miller has more impact when the rest of your pitching staff can get him into leverage spots. If your starters constantly leave in the third, your relief workload becomes too large and his stamina disappears when you need him most.
For players planning roster upgrades, compare prices and card attributes before chasing hype. MLB The Show 26 Stubs for sale can help finish a targeted purchase, but Miller makes the most sense after your starting pitching and core lineup are already reliable.
